Paintings My paintings tend to gravitate toward moody, eerie images although I attempt to create this through a formal visual standard of composition, color, juxapostion and relationship of form. I have recently devoted my energies to painting and drawing landscapes as I am interested in portraying our natural world using pure aesthetic terms. The series Southbury Trees are based on close up views of the trees in back of my house in Connecticut. These vertical forms create a rhythm across the extremely horizontal expanse of the canvas and within a carefully painted composition. I've created a series of small collages in which many have become the basis for new large-scale works on canvas. The compositions are independent of scalesmall collages become large paintingsand color, shape, and subject matter are combined to create an abstract pictorial space. The backgrounds can range from placid impressions to charged, nervous settings for altered objects placed in front. The juxtaposed images somehow relate to one another within the abstract composition. Color is an important factor; the relationship between the colors used is comparable to the juxtaposition of dissimilar images. |
